Part 'A': Reflection:
In this unit I learned that Cultural Contact between the Beothuk, Six Nations Confederacy, Hunters of the Plains and Europeans all resulted with the first nations people dying and all their resources and land were taken over by the Europeans.
I found it really interesting that Imperialism had such negative effects all around the world, Such as, People losing their culture, religion and customs. There were some positive things such as resources being traded and goods being produced as well.
I can connect what I have learned in class to: My English class because the Europeans tried to assimilate the first nations peoples by teaching them the English language.
What surprised me in this unit was all about the residential schools. There was a lot of shocks to me about what they had done to the students there, Mental, Physical and Emotional abuse and that the Europeans thought that what they were doing was 'the right thing to do' and was going to be good for the first nations in there future. But they were wrong to teach them the way that they did. It did have a positive effect on them in the way that they knew more about the Europeans and a different language and culture but that did not mean that the Europeans had to make the first nations let go of their culture in the process.
One concept that I am still having difficulty with is the leads to industrialization. From the silk road to mercantilism, capitalism and industrialization.
One skill or learning strategy I found useful was S.O.A.P.S which was a source interpreting sheet that consisted of analyzing the: Subject- what the general subject or topic is trying to tell us, Occasion- what was the time or place, Audience- who was the source created for. (Who would be the general people that they are trying to connect to), Purpose- why the source was created and what was the author trying to communicate. And Speaker- whose voice is telling the story.
